North-east is the traditional quadrant

The person praying faces east or north. In a compact flat, the north-east corner of the living room or a passage niche is the usual placement when no dedicated room exists.

Avoid placing it in a bathroom wall or under a stair

Both are traditionally avoided. Under-stair placement also creates a practical problem with lamp heat and ventilation.

Keep the idol raised and not against a bathroom wall

A raised platform at roughly chest height when seated, with a solid backing wall that is not shared with a wet area.

Ventilate for lamp smoke

A jaali back panel or proximity to a window. This is practical rather than traditional, but soot damage is the most common complaint about pooja units.

Use materials that take heat

Teak or marble around the lamp. Laminate directly above a diya will discolour within a year.
