Work with the quadrant, not the room

Where the room's function cannot move, the north-east corner of that room can usually still take the element traditionally assigned to it — the pooja niche, the water source, the study desk.

Kitchen in the south-east where possible

The traditional placement puts the cooking flame in the south-east, with the cook facing east. Where the builder has fixed the plumbing, orienting the hob within the existing kitchen is the practical compromise.

Sleep with the head to the south or east

This is one of the easiest guidelines to follow because it only requires moving the bed, and it is the one most people report actually noticing.

Keep the north-east light and uncluttered

Avoid putting heavy storage or a toilet in the north-east corner of the home. Where it already exists, keeping the area light in colour and well lit is the usual mitigation.

Treat it as one input among several

Daylight, ventilation, circulation and privacy are also design constraints, and where they conflict with orientation guidance, most households find a balance rather than following either absolutely.
