Slat Walls: Where They Work and Where They Date
The most-copied detail of the last five years, used well and used badly.

Slats work as a full plane, not a patch
Floor to ceiling and wall to wall, or corner to corner. A rectangle of slats floating in the middle of a wall is what makes the detail look applied.
Spacing sets the character
A narrow gap reads as texture; a wide gap reads as a screen. Keep the gap consistent and set the slat module out so you do not end on a part-slat.
Back them in the right colour
The backing board is visible in every gap. Matching it to the slat gives depth; a contrasting backing turns it into a stripe pattern.
They collect dust
Horizontal slats collect considerably more than vertical. In a dusty city, vertical orientation is the practical choice.
Use them where they do a job
Behind a bed, behind a TV, or as an acoustic surface in a study. Slats with a felt backing genuinely help a room's acoustics, which is the best argument for them.
