Choosing Upholstery That Survives Real Life

The fabric decision that people regret most often, and how to avoid it.

Check the rub count before the colour

30,000 Martindale rubs is the sensible domestic minimum, 40,000+ for a family sofa used daily. A beautiful fabric at 15,000 will pill within a year.

Performance weaves have caught up

Solution-dyed acrylics and treated polyesters now come in textures that read like linen and wool, and they take a wet cloth without watermarking. On a family sofa the trade is worth it.

Loose covers are worth the premium

A removable, washable cover roughly doubles the usable life of a sofa in a home with children or pets, and it is the only realistic way to deal with an accident.

Dark fabrics show dust, light fabrics show marks

Mid-tones with a visible weave hide both better than either extreme. This is why so many well-photographed sofas are oatmeal.

Order a large sample and live with it

Look at it in the actual room for a week. Fabric shifts more than paint does between daylight and lamplight.
