Bespoke or Ready-Made: Where the Money Is Actually Worth It
A straightforward test for each piece.

In this article
Bespoke wins where the piece touches the building
Wardrobes, kitchen runs, TV walls, window seats. Anything that must fit an exact opening or run wall to wall is worth making, because the alternative leaves gaps that collect dust.
Ready-made wins on upholstery
Volume manufacturers do foam, springs and frames better and cheaper than a site carpenter. Buy the sofa; build the joinery.
Dining tables are a judgement call
Standard sizes cover most rooms. Go bespoke only if the room needs an unusual length or you want a specific stone or timber.
Beds are usually better bought
Storage beds have mechanisms that benefit from manufacture. A bespoke bed makes sense mainly when it integrates with a headboard wall.
Never bespoke something you might move
If a piece may follow you to the next home, buy it. Built-in joinery stays with the flat, and that is a real cost when you leave.
