How Much Ceiling Height Can You Actually Afford to Lose?
The honest answer depends entirely on your slab height, and most people give away too much.

Start from your finished floor to slab measurement
Most Indian apartments hand over between 2,750mm and 3,050mm. Below 2,750mm, a full false ceiling in the middle of the room is very hard to justify.
A peripheral cove costs you nothing usable
A 250mm drop at the perimeter leaves the centre of the room at full height. Visually the room still reads tall because the highest point is the one you see most.
Full drops need a reason
Ducted air conditioning, a media room's acoustic build-up, or concealing a beam. Doing it for a lighting pattern alone rarely repays the height.
Zone the drop instead of covering everything
An island of ceiling over the seating group or the dining table gives you the design and the concealment without lowering the whole room.
Mind the door heads
A drop that lands below 2,100mm at a door creates an awkward soffit. Set the ceiling grid out against the door heights before finalising the design.
