Dining Room Designs
A dining room is a geometry problem. Get the table size and the clearance around it right and almost any style works. Get them wrong and the most beautiful table in the world will be the one people squeeze past sideways for the next ten years.
In Indian apartments the dining area is usually not a room at all but a zone within a larger living space, often the circulation route between the kitchen and everywhere else. That changes the design question from decoration to traffic.
This page covers table sizing, the clearances that decide comfort, how to light a table properly, storage, and the surfaces that survive Indian dining.
Table size, per person rather than per room
Each seated person needs 600 to 700mm of table edge and about 400mm of depth. That gives real numbers: a four-seater at 1,200 by 800mm, a six-seater at 1,600 to 1,800 by 900mm, an eight-seater at 2,200 by 1,000mm. A round table seats efficiently and is far better for conversation, but above about 1,400mm diameter the centre becomes unreachable.
Table height is 750mm and chair seat height 450mm almost universally, which gives the 300mm of thigh clearance that makes sitting comfortable. Check the apron depth on any table with a deep rail – it is what stops a chair pushing in, and it is rarely mentioned in a product listing.
Clearance is what people actually feel
Allow 900mm from the table edge to the nearest wall or furniture for a chair to pull out and a person to sit. Where someone has to walk behind a seated diner, that becomes 1,100mm. Below 750mm, the chair cannot be pulled out far enough to sit down without turning sideways.
- 600 to 700mm of table edge per person, 400mm depth each
- 900mm from table edge to wall as the working minimum
- 1,100mm where circulation passes behind seated diners
- 750mm table height against 450mm seat height
- 1,400mm maximum diameter on a round table before the centre is unreachable
This is the number that decides whether a dining area works, and it is the one most often sacrificed to fit a larger table. A six-seater with proper clearance is a better room than an eight-seater without it, every single time.
Dining inside an open plan
When the dining table sits in a shared volume, it needs something to make it read as a place rather than as furniture parked in a walkway. The three tools are a rug sized to hold the table and the pulled-out chairs, a pendant hung over it, and a change in the ceiling above.
Keep it out of the primary traffic line between the front door and the kitchen. If that is unavoidable, orient the table along the route rather than across it, so people pass down the length rather than squeezing between a chair and a wall.
Lighting a table
A pendant hangs 750 to 900mm above the table top – measured to the bottom of the fitting, not the ceiling rose. Higher than 900mm and it stops defining the table; lower and people knock their heads standing up. Over a long table, two or three smaller pendants read better than one large fitting.
Use a warm 2700K source and put it on a dimmer, because the same table is a homework desk at seven and a dinner table at nine. Avoid a downlight directly over each seat, which lights the tops of heads and puts faces in shadow.
Storage and surfaces that survive
A crockery unit or sideboard within reach of the table is the difference between a set table and a series of trips to the kitchen. 450mm depth is enough for most crockery and keeps the unit from crowding the room; a run of 1,800mm covers a family's everyday and occasional sets.
For the table top itself, solid timber with a matte PU is repairable and forgiving. Marble is beautiful and stains from turmeric, oil and lemon unless properly sealed and wiped promptly. Sintered stone and toughened glass are the practical choices in a household with young children, because neither is affected by anything spilled on it.
Specification
How we plan a dining area
Every dimension here comes from how people actually sit and move, not from a furniture catalogue.
| Specification | What we build |
|---|---|
| Space per diner | 600 to 700mm of edge, 400mm depth |
| Four-seater | 1,200 x 800mm |
| Six-seater | 1,600 to 1,800 x 900mm |
| Eight-seater | 2,200 x 1,000mm |
| Table height | 750mm, with 300mm clear thigh space above the seat |
| Clearance to wall | 900mm minimum, 1,100mm where people walk behind |
| Pendant height | 750 to 900mm above the table top |
| Colour temperature | 2700K, on a dimmer |
| Rug size | Table footprint plus 600mm on every side |
| Sideboard depth | 450mm, 1,800mm run for a family |
Budget
What a dining area costs
| Scope | Indicative range | What moves the number |
|---|---|---|
| Table and six chairs, engineered | Rs 45,000 to Rs 1.2 lakh | Top material and chair upholstery |
| Solid timber or stone table | Rs 1.4 to Rs 4.5 lakh | Species, slab and base detail |
| Crockery unit, built in | Rs 65,000 to Rs 2.2 lakh | Width, glass and internal lighting |
| Pendant lighting | Rs 12,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh | Fitting and number of pendants |
Indicative ranges for furniture and joinery. A dining area that also needs ceiling work, a rug and dimmable circuits should be budgeted with those lines added separately.
Detailing
Four dining room errors
Buying the table before measuring clearance
An eight-seater in a room that supports six means every meal involves someone standing up so another person can pass. Mark the table and the 900mm ring on the floor with tape before ordering.
Hanging the pendant too high
Above 900mm the fitting stops belonging to the table and starts looking like a general room light. Measure to the bottom of the fitting with the table in place, not from the drawing.
A rug that only fits the table
When chairs are pulled out their back legs drop off the edge and catch every time. The rug needs the table footprint plus 600mm on all four sides, or no rug at all.
Unsealed marble in an Indian kitchen-adjacent table
Turmeric, lemon and oil will each mark unsealed marble permanently, usually within the first month. Seal it, and commit to wiping spills immediately, or choose sintered stone instead.
Living with it
Living with a dining table
Wipe spills as they happen rather than at the end of the meal, particularly turmeric and oil on any porous stone. On sealed marble, a spill left overnight is the difference between a wipe and a permanent shadow. Re-seal natural stone every 12 to 18 months, which is a 20-minute job with a proprietary sealer.
Solid timber tops benefit from coasters under anything hot and from a light re-oiling or re-polishing every two or three years, depending on use. Check and tighten the chair joints annually – dining chairs take more racking stress than any other furniture in the house, and a loose joint left alone becomes a broken one.
Questions
Dining room questions
What size dining table fits my room?
Take the room dimension, subtract 1,800mm from both length and width – that is 900mm of clearance on each side – and what remains is your maximum table size. A 3.6 by 3m dining area therefore supports a table up to about 1,800 by 1,200mm, which is a comfortable six-seater.
Round or rectangular?
Round is better for conversation and for circulation in a tight space, because there are no corners to catch a hip. Rectangular seats more people per square foot and suits a long room. Above six seats, rectangular is usually the only practical choice, since a round table over 1,400mm becomes unreachable in the middle.
How high should a dining pendant hang?
750 to 900mm above the table top, measured to the bottom of the fitting. Over a table longer than 1,800mm, two or three smaller pendants spaced evenly look better and light the surface more evenly than a single large one hung in the middle.
Can the dining table go in the living room?
In most Indian apartments it already does, and it works when the zone is defined rather than left ambiguous. A rug, a pendant and ideally a ceiling change above the table are what turn a parked table into a dining area. The main thing to avoid is placing it across the main route from the front door to the kitchen.
What is the most practical dining table top?
Sintered stone for a family with young children, because nothing stains it and it takes heat. Solid timber with a matte PU is the most forgiving to repair, since scratches can be sanded and re-polished locally. Marble is the most beautiful and the highest maintenance, and it needs sealing plus a household that wipes spills immediately.
