Emerald Deco Fluted desk with a lit shelf Study Room Design

Fluting, fans and geometry. Lacquered colour, brass inlay lines and mirror used as architecture. A study for school-age children is a different brief from a home office: shorter sightlines, tougher surfaces, and storage a child can actually reach.

Questions

Study Room questions

What is the right height for a child's study desk?

560mm at around age six, rising to 720mm by the mid-teens. Rather than replacing the desk, buy an adjustable chair and add a footrest so the child's feet stay supported.

How much light does a study desk need?

About 500 lux on the work surface. That normally means daylight plus a dedicated task lamp — ceiling light alone puts the child's own shadow on the page.

Should the desk face a wall or a window?

A wall or side-on to the window. Facing a window creates glare on the page and screen, and it is a reliable source of distraction.

What surface handles school use best?

Matt laminate or sealed stone. Both take ink, glue and craft knives better than veneer or lacquer, and both wipe clean without marking.
